Scooter is one type of a motor vehicle that is characterized by having a footboard between the two wheels and has a saddle-like seat mounted on the said footboard. A motor is responsible for propelling the scooter. A definition by the United States Department of Transportation describes a scooter as “a motorcycle that (1) has a platform for the operator’s feet or has integrated footrests, and (2) has a step-through architecture, meaning that the part of the vehicle forward of the operator’s seat and between the legs of an operator seated in the riding position, is lower in height than the operator’s seat.”

Because of their low cost and convenience in driving position, scooters are already gaining more following and patronization today from different continents, like Asia and Europe. Even in the United States of America, the Motorcycle Industry Council says that the sales of scooters have already increased twice in number since 2000. According to the statistics of the said agency, in 2000, there were 42,000 scooters that were sold. And four years ago, in 2004, the number increased to 96,000. Today, China is the world’s largest manufacturer of scooters, supplying over 50% of the world’s total supply.

Meta-scooters, a new variety of scooters, only larger, are also significantly gaining more popularity today.
